Origin: South America (Amazon and Orinoco basins)
Hypostomus plecostomus is one of the most recognisable freshwater fish in the world, responsible for introducing millions of aquarists to catfish keeping. Despite its widespread sale as a small juvenile, it grows to 50 cm and requires very large aquariums. It is a robust, adaptable herbivore that grazes biofilm, algae, and driftwood with impressive dedication.
Water: 22–30°C, pH 6.0–7.5, adaptable to a wide range of conditions. Tank: Minimum 400L; large driftwood for grazing and shelter; robust decor it won't overturn. Feeding: Herbivore; algae wafers, large blanched vegetables, driftwood; supplement with sinking pellets. Behaviour: Largely nocturnal; can be aggressive toward other plecos in adulthood. Compatibility: Suitable for large cichlid tanks and large community setups; not for nano tanks.
