About

Hypostomus plecostomus is one of the most recognisable freshwater fish in the world, responsible for introducing millions of aquarists to catfish keeping. Despite its widespread sale as a small juvenile, it grows to 50 cm and requires very large aquariums. It is a robust, adaptable herbivore that grazes biofilm, algae, and driftwood with impressive dedication.

Care Guide

Water: 22–30°C, pH 6.0–7.5, adaptable to a wide range of conditions. Tank: Minimum 400L; large driftwood for grazing and shelter; robust decor it won't overturn. Feeding: Herbivore; algae wafers, large blanched vegetables, driftwood; supplement with sinking pellets. Behaviour: Largely nocturnal; can be aggressive toward other plecos in adulthood. Compatibility: Suitable for large cichlid tanks and large community setups; not for nano tanks.
