Hypostomus plecostomus
Origin: Northeastern South America and Trinidad
The Common Pleco is the iconic suckermouth catfish that introduced generations of hobbyists to loricariids, native to coastal rivers of northeastern South America and Trinidad. While widely sold as an algae eater, aquarists must understand it grows substantially larger than most expect and requires a well-planned large aquarium in adulthood. Provided with adequate space and a varied diet, it is hardy and extremely long-lived.
Buy only with a plan for its adult size (up to 50cm). Provide a very large tank (300L+) with ample floor space and a sturdy lid. Feed algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and meaty supplements as it grows. Provide large driftwood for rasping. Will uproot plants. Produces significant waste — excellent filtration mandatory. Very long-lived (20+ years).
