Planorbarius corneus
Origin: Cosmopolitan
The Common Ramshorn Snail is a staple cleaning snail for freshwater aquariums, featuring the characteristic flat, spiraling ram's horn shell in dark brown coloration. It consumes leftover food, algae, and decaying plant matter without bothering healthy plants. An excellent and undemanding member of any freshwater cleanup crew.
Thrives in a wide range of freshwater conditions. No special care required — they self-regulate population size based on available food. To control population: reduce feeding to prevent overabundance, or introduce snail-eating fish such as assassin snails or pea puffers. Requires adequate calcium in the water for healthy shell development.
