Crenicichla compressiceps
Also known as: Compressiceps Pike Cichlid, Flat-headed Dwarf Pike
Origin: South America (Brazil, Rio Tocantins rapids)
Crenicichla compressiceps is a rheophilic dwarf pike cichlid from the rocky rapids of the Rio Tocantins in Brazil. It is distinguished by its strongly laterally compressed head and spectacular orange-red to red spotting across the body and fins in breeding individuals. Despite its small size relative to other pike cichlids, it remains predatory and best suited to experienced keepers with a species or appropriately sized tank.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 5.5-7.0, GH 2-10, KH 0-4; well-oxygenated water beneficial. Tank: 100L minimum; rocky caves and strong filtration to replicate rapids habitat. Feeding: Carnivore; small fish, frozen shrimp, earthworms, and meaty pellets. Behaviour: Moderately aggressive; pairs form strong bonds; territorial around spawning sites. Compatibility: Avoid keeping with small fish; suitable with medium-sized robust cichlids.
