Polypterus retropinnis
Also known as: Congo Bichir, Retropinnis Bichir
Origin: Africa
Polypterus retropinnis is endemic to the Congo River and its tributaries, where it inhabits slow-moving, vegetated margins. Its most notable feature is the position of its dorsal fin, shifted noticeably further toward the tail than in most other species. Moderately sized and manageable, it suits a Congo-themed large aquarium.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to moderately hard, slightly tannin-stained water beneficial. Tank: Minimum 250L, driftwood tangles for shelter, fine substrate, secure lid. Feeding: Carnivore; live and frozen invertebrates, sinking pellets, occasional white fish pieces. Behaviour: Calm and undemanding; coexists well with other polypterids of similar size. Compatibility: Suitable with large African tetras, robust catfish, and other Congo basin species.
