Thoracochromis brauschi
Also known as: Congo Cichlid, Brauschi Cichlid
Origin: Congo Basin, Central Africa
The Congo Cichlid is a representative of the diverse Haplochromine radiation in the Congo River Basin, separate from the Great Rift Lake cichlids but sharing the maternal mouthbrooding reproductive strategy. It displays moderate colouration with attractive banding and is suited to slightly harder water conditions than typical soft-water Congo fish.
Water: 23-26°C, pH 7.0-8.5, moderately hard water; adaptable compared to strict rift lake species. Tank: Minimum 200L; mixed rocky and open sandy zones; robust filtration. Feeding: Omnivore diet of quality cichlid pellets, frozen mysis, brine shrimp, and spirulina. Behaviour: Moderately territorial; males can be aggressive toward conspecifics during spawning. Compatibility: Medium-sized African cichlid community; compatible with other Congo or lake cichlids of similar size.
