Nanochromis parilus
Also known as: Congo Dwarf Cichlid
Origin: Central Africa (Congo River)
Nanochromis parilus is a small cichlid endemic to the Congo River basin, inhabiting areas of slower flow with sandy or rocky substrate. Males are more colourful with elongated fin tips, while females have a rounded pink-red belly. Like other Nanochromis, they require very soft, acidic water and are sensitive to poor water quality.
Water: 24–27°C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft water critical (GH 1–6). Tank: Minimum 60L; smooth sand substrate with caves, flat stones, and dense planting. Feeding: Small micro pellets, frozen daphnia, cyclops, and live nauplii. Behaviour: Cave brooder; females initiate spawning and defend the nest; males guard territory perimeter. Compatibility: Best with small, unobtrusive upper-level fish; avoid other bottom-dwellers.
