Tetraodon miurus
Also known as: Dark Congo Puffer, Black Congo Ambush Puffer, Melanistic Congo Puffer
Origin: Congo River basin, Central Africa
The dark form of Tetraodon miurus presents a deeply saturated charcoal-brown to near-black patterning with poorly defined mottling that provides almost perfect camouflage in dark sandy or muddy substrate. This morph may represent either an ontogenetic colour phase, a regional population variant, or stress-induced darkening in captivity, though consistent dark-form specimens have been observed suggesting at least partial geographic basis. Care is identical to all T. miurus: a deep sand bed for burial, live or motion-triggering prey, impeccably clean water, and a single-specimen setup. The dark form's cryptic appearance makes it even more difficult to spot when buried, adding to its mystique as a specialist's specimen. It commands premium prices compared to the more common spotted form.
Water: pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 24–27°C, soft to moderate; zero ammonia/nitrite tolerance; strong biological filter. Tank: 80 L minimum; 8+ cm fine dark sand preferred; minimal décor; substrate siphoning critical. Feeding: Live earthworms and ghost shrimp preferred; frozen prawns, bloodworm accepted once established. Breeding: Not documented; wild seasonal spawner in Congo system. Compatibility: Solitary only; will ambush and consume any fish passing over its burial spot.
