Mastacembelus congicus
Also known as: Congo Spiny Eel
Origin: Congo River Basin, Central Africa
Mastacembelus congicus is a large and powerful spiny eel endemic to the Congo River system and its tributaries across Central Africa. It inhabits fast-flowing and turbid river sections where strong current and rocky substrate provide structure, though it will use soft muddy margins for burrowing.
In the hobby this species is an infrequent import appearing occasionally in specialist African fish batches. Its mottled brown-and-cream pattern is subtle but attractive, and its rarity alone makes it a prized addition to a Congo biotope aquarium alongside species such as Congo tetras, synodontis catfish, and bichirs.
Care requirements follow those of other large Mastacembelus: deep fine sand, strong filtration, and a completely sealed tank. It can be kept with other large, robust African fish that it cannot consume. Meaty foods including earthworms, prawns, and frozen fish flesh are eagerly accepted. Water quality must be excellent as this species is sensitive to elevated nitrates.
Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 6.0–7.2, temperature 23–27°C, GH 2–12, KH 1–5. Tank: Minimum 250 L, strong filtration, deep sand, driftwood and rock decor, sealed lid. Feeding: Carnivore; earthworms, prawns, frozen fish, mussel, and carnivore pellets. Breeding: Not recorded in captivity. Compatibility: Large robust Congo community fish; avoid small species that will be eaten.
