Phenacogrammus interruptus
Also known as: Congo Tetra
Origin: Central Africa (Congo basin)
Phenacogrammus interruptus is the jewel of the West African tetra world, originating from the Congo River basin. Males develop spectacular flowing extensions to the central tail fin rays and display a breathtaking iridescent colour spectrum along their flanks. They are best kept in schools of six or more in a well-planted aquarium with soft, slightly acidic water.
Water: 23–27°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to medium hardness. Tank: Minimum 100L; long tank with open swimming space and planted margins. Feeding: Quality flake, small pellets, and frozen daphnia, brine shrimp, and cyclops. Behaviour: Peaceful schooling fish; males spar harmlessly with fin displays. Compatibility: Excellent community fish with other West African species; avoid large aggressive cichlids.
