Nanochromis consortus
Also known as: Consortus Dwarf Cichlid
Origin: Central Africa (Congo River basin)
Nanochromis consortus is an uncommon species from the Congo River drainage, seldom seen in the hobby and highly sought after by specialists. It exhibits the typical Nanochromis body form and cave-spawning behaviour but with its own distinctive colouration. Very soft, acidic water and a stress-free environment are key to its well-being.
Water: 24–27°C, pH 5.5–6.8, very soft water (GH 1–5). Tank: Minimum 60L; dark substrate, leaf litter, caves, and subdued lighting. Feeding: Fine-grade micro pellets, live and frozen daphnia, cyclops, and artemia nauplii. Behaviour: Secretive cave brooder; rarely seen in open water; spawning is private and unannounced. Compatibility: Species-only tank strongly recommended due to rarity and specialist requirements.
