Amatitlania nigrofasciata × Thorichthys meeki hybrid
Also known as: Convict Firemouth Hybrid, Convict × Firemouth
Origin: Captive bred (hybrid)
The Convict × Firemouth hybrid is produced from crosses between Amatitlania nigrofasciata (Convict Cichlid) and Thorichthys meeki (Firemouth Cichlid). The resulting fish inherits an intermediate body shape with elements of both parents: the black vertical banding of the Convict combined with the red-orange throat, blue-green body iridescence, and more pointed snout of the Firemouth.
This hybrid is moderately aggressive and displays gill-flaring threat behaviour characteristic of the Firemouth parent, making it an interesting behavioural subject as well as a visually appealing fish. Aggression is typically at an intermediate level between the two parent species.
As a first-generation hybrid, this fish exhibits hybrid vigour and tends to be robust and fast-growing. It is an interesting conversation piece for cichlid enthusiasts who appreciate the novelty of hybrid traits and behaviours.
Water: 23–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0; adaptable; moderate hardness suitable. Tank: Minimum 200L; provide caves and rockwork for territory definition; sandy substrate preferred. Feeding: Omnivore; quality cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, and vegetable matter. Breeding: May spawn in captivity; parental care behaviour unpredictable in hybrids. Compatibility: Aggressive; best with similarly sized robust cichlids; avoid very passive fish.
