Copadichromis azureus

Copadichromis azureus is widely considered the crown jewel of the utaka group. Dominant males are spectacular: the entire body turns a deep azure-blue while the forehead develops a striking white-silver blaze that contrasts sharply against the blue, creating one of the most distinctive and instantly recognizable color patterns among Malawi haplochromines.

This species is a plankton-feeding open-water swimmer that forms large schools in nature. In the aquarium it is peaceful, active, and best displayed in groups of five or more where males display to each other and females in a constantly animated spectacle. It is compatible with Peacocks, other utaka, and medium Haps, making it a wonderful addition to a large mixed Malawi community.

Maternal mouthbrooder producing moderate broods. Females are silver-grey with faint barring. Azureus is more active near the water surface and mid-column than most Haps, adding valuable visual activity to upper tank levels that Peacocks and sand-sifters leave relatively quiet.

Water: pH 7.6–8.8, 24–28°C, GH 10–20, KH 10–18; clean, well-oxygenated water for this active swimmer. Tank: 250 L minimum; wide tank with open water column; sandy midground; keep in groups of 5+. Feeding: Omnivore pellets, frozen Artemia, cyclops, and mysis; feed twice daily; supplement spirulina for color. Breeding: Easy maternal mouthbrooder in group setups; females hold ~3 weeks; separate if group is not large enough to dilute male aggression. Compatibility: Excellent with Aulonocara, Lethrinops, Otopharynx, and medium Haps; peaceful toward most Malawi species.
