Crenicichla coppenamensis
Also known as: Coppenamensis Pike Cichlid, Coppename River Pike Cichlid
Origin: Coppename River system, Suriname
Crenicichla coppenamensis is a graceful, medium-sized pike cichlid restricted to the Coppename River system of central Suriname. Like many Guiana Shield Crenicichla, it inhabits clear, slightly acidic rivers flowing over white-sand and rock substrates, often sheltering among submerged root tangles and fallen timber along the river bank.
In the aquarium, C. coppenamensis adapts reasonably well to captive conditions provided water quality is maintained at a high standard. The species benefits from soft to moderate water, tannin additions, and a tank decorated to mimic its natural habitat. It is a mid-sized predator of 18 cm, making a 180 L tank workable for a single specimen or a bonded pair.
The lateral stripe is particularly well-defined in this species, and the upper flanks display fine speckling visible in good lighting. Males are slightly larger and develop more intense fin colouration. Breeding has been achieved by Suriname-cichlid specialists, following the standard Crenicichla cave-spawning protocol.
Water: Soft, slightly acidic water (pH 5.5–7.0) at 24–28°C; tannins beneficial. Tank: 180 L with white sand, rounded roots, driftwood tangles, and dim lighting. Feeding: Frozen carnivore foods — prawn, bloodworm, mussel — plus quality cichlid pellets. Breeding: Cave spawner; separate pair into species tank for best breeding results. Compatibility: Species tank preferred; robust similarly sized fish as dithers if required.
