Betta splendens
Also known as: Copper Betta, Metallic Copper Betta, Gold Betta
Origin: Southeast Asia
Copper bettas are produced by selecting for a specific iridocyte cell layer that gives a warm, burnished metallic copper tone to the entire fish. Under light they appear to glow, ranging from pale gold-copper to deep metallic brown-orange. Copper is often combined with other colour genetics to produce richly complex fish.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to medium hardness — clean water and good lighting maximise the metallic effect. Tank: minimum 20L, planted; bright LED lighting brings out the copper iridescence beautifully. Feeding: carnivore — betta pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp; twice daily. Behaviour: males aggressive to own species — one per tank. Compatibility: suitable for peaceful community tanks; colour is more vivid in well-planted setups.
