Xiphophorus maculatus var.
Also known as: Coral Platy, Peach Platy
Origin: Captive bred (originally Mexico/Guatemala)
The Coral Platy is a selectively developed Xiphophorus maculatus variant with a warm, soft peachy-orange colouration that sits between classic orange and pink, evoking the soft tones of tropical coral. Unlike the vivid red or sunset varieties, the Coral Platy offers a more restrained and elegant colour choice for aquarists who prefer a subtler palette.
The coral colouration is best expressed in well-lit aquariums with a neutral or dark substrate and is enhanced by a diet that includes carotenoid-rich foods. Females tend to be slightly paler than males.
All the excellent hardiness and adaptability of platies apply to the Coral form, making it suitable for beginners seeking a soft-coloured livebearer.
Water: 20–26 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderate to hard water. Tank: 60 L minimum; good lighting helps show the coral tone; standard community setup. Feeding: Varied omnivore diet; carotenoid-rich colour-enhancing foods maintain the warm coral shade. Breeding: Prolific; fry robust; coral colouration develops fully by 6–8 weeks. Compatibility: Peaceful; compatible with all non-aggressive community fish.
