Cornu aspersum
Also known as: Brown Garden Snail, Common Garden Snail
Origin: Europe / Mediterranean
Cornu aspersum, commonly known as the Brown Garden Snail, is a widely recognised terrestrial snail that thrives in paludarium enclosures with humid land areas. It is an excellent clean-up crew member for the terrarium portion of a paludarium, consuming decaying plant matter, fruit, and soft vegetation. Its familiar banded shell and engaging behaviour make it an accessible and interesting display animal, though it will consume live plants.
Water: terrestrial; maintain 70–80% humidity; shallow water dish for hydration. Tank: minimum 30 L paludarium, deep moist substrate (coco fibre/soil), hiding spots. Feeding: fruit, vegetables, leafy greens, calcium supplement (cuttlebone) for shell. Behaviour: nocturnal; terrestrial grazer; will eat soft live plants. Compatibility: keep with other garden snails; not suitable in aquatic fish community.
