Corydoras julii
Also known as: Julii Cory, Julii Corydoras, Leopard Cory
Origin: South America (Brazil, northeastern coastal river drainages)
Corydoras julii, the Julii Cory or Julii Corydoras, is a classic and beautiful small corydoras native to the lower Amazon coastal river drainages of northeastern Brazil. It is one of the most spotted corydoras species — a white to silver body covered with numerous dark brown to black spots on the body, head, and all fins, creating an attractive 'leopard' pattern.
An important identification note: the Julii Cory is frequently confused with the False Julii (Corydoras trilineatus), which is far more commonly available in the aquarium trade. True C. julii has spots on the body that remain separate rather than forming a reticulated network — while C. trilineatus tends to have spots that merge into a somewhat more connected pattern on the flanks. In practice, most fish sold as 'Julii Cory' in shops are actually C. trilineatus, but both are excellent aquarium fish with identical care requirements.
Like all corydoras species, the Julii Cory is peaceful, social, armoured, and possesses the intestinal respiration adaptation that allows periodic surface air gulping. It forages continuously along the substrate with its sensitive barbels, making it an excellent 'clean-up crew' fish in community aquariums.
Julii Corydoras prefer softer, slightly more acidic water than many corydoras species — reflecting their origin in the coastal river systems of northeastern Brazil rather than the more widespread Amazon tributaries.
Tank Setup: A minimum 60-litre tank for a group of six. Fine sand substrate (essential for sensitive barbels). Driftwood, flat stones, broad-leaved plants, and gentle filtration. Gentle siphoning of the sand substrate during water changes keeps detritus in check.
Water Parameters: Temperature 22–26°C; pH 6.0–7.5; GH 2–12 °dH; KH 1–6 °dH. Prefers slightly soft, mildly acidic water compared to many corydoras species. Avoid sustained temperatures above 27°C.
Feeding: Omnivore bottom forager. Sinking wafers, corydoras pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, Daphnia, and Tubifex. Feed in the evening. Ensure food reaches the substrate in community tanks.
Tank Mates: Compatible with virtually all peaceful community species: tetras, rasboras, small danios, livebearers, small gouramis, small cichlids, Otocinclus. Avoid aggressive cichlids and large predatory fish.
Behaviour: Peaceful, social, and active bottom forager. Groups of 6+ forage in coordinated formation. Surface dashing to gulp air is normal respiratory behaviour. Can be mixed with other corydoras species (both true C. julii and C. trilineatus).
Health: Hardy and long-lived. Main risks: barbel erosion from sharp substrate, bacterial infections from dirty water. Fine sand and pristine water prevent most issues.
