Moenkhausia cotinho
Also known as: Cotinho Moenkhausia, Scale-mosaic Tetra
Origin: Brazil (Araguaia-Tocantins basin)
Moenkhausia cotinho is a medium to large tetra from the Araguaia-Tocantins basin in central Brazil. Its yellowish-translucent body displays prominently outlined scales that create an elegant mosaic or net pattern visible under good aquarium lighting. A robust and adaptable species, it tolerates a broader range of water conditions than many Amazonian tetras. Its size and active nature make it best suited to larger community aquariums where it can school freely. It pairs well with similarly sized peaceful South American fish including other large tetras, medium cichlids, and armored catfish. An excellent choice for hobbyists building large South American display tanks.
Water: pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 23–28 °C; soft to moderately hard. Adaptable to conditioned tap water. Tank: 80 L minimum; open swimming space with robust planting along sides. Good filtration essential. Feeding: Omnivore; pellets, flake, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, and vegetable-based foods. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; soft neutral water. Larger tank improves spawning success. Compatibility: Peaceful; best with similarly sized South American species. Avoid small nano fish.
