Hemichromis cristatus
Also known as: Crested Jewel Cichlid
Origin: West/Central Africa
Hemichromis cristatus is a widespread jewel cichlid species characterised by strong iridescent spotting and a generally reddish or orange-red background colouration. It is similar in care requirements to H. bimaculatus but can be slightly more variable in temperament. Robust tankmates and spacious aquariums help reduce conflict.
Water: 22–27°C, pH 6.0–7.5, moderate hardness acceptable. Tank: Minimum 100L; caves, robust driftwood, and sturdy plants or artificial decor. Feeding: Cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworm, earthworms, and live invertebrates. Behaviour: Open spawner; both parents defend a large territory and guard fry aggressively. Compatibility: Keep as a pair; tankmates must be large and robust; avoid small or timid species.
