Cribroheros alfari
Also known as: Alfaro's Cichlid, Pastel Cichlid
Origin: Costa Rica, Panama
Cribroheros alfari is found in the Atlantic slope rivers of Costa Rica and Panama, inhabiting clear to moderately turbid waters with a preference for vegetated areas and moderate current. Its slender, somewhat elongated body profile distinguishes it from the deeper-bodied Cribroheros species, and the spangled blue-green scaling over a grey-olive body is particularly attractive in good lighting.
One of the most community-friendly Central American cichlids, C. alfari is significantly more tolerant of cohabitation than most of its relatives. Outside breeding season it can be maintained with larger robust community fish such as other medium cichlids, large barbs, and robust livebearers without constant aggression issues.
During spawning the pair becomes notably more assertive, defending a territory around their selected cave, but rarely inflicts serious damage on tankmates in adequately sized aquaria. This species is recommended for intermediate hobbyists wanting to add a Central American cichlid to an established community setup.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 6.5–7.5, GH 5–15, KH 2–8; soft to medium-hard water preferred; moderate flow. Tank: 180 L minimum; mixed planting, caves, driftwood; tolerates planted setups better than most CA cichlids. Feeding: Omnivore — medium pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, and occasional vegetable supplement. Breeding: Cave brooder; pair defends moderately; 100–250 eggs; manageable with robust tankmates in large tanks. Compatibility: Best community-compatible CA cichlid; suitable with large robust fish outside breeding.
