Betta coccina
Origin: Malaysia (Malay Peninsula) and Sumatra, Indonesia
Betta coccina, the Wine Red Betta, is a jewel-like wild betta from the blackwater peat swamps of the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra. Its body glows deep wine-red with an iridescent blue-green spot on each flank. A bubble-nesting species; while territorial among males, pairs can coexist in a well-planted, soft, acidic blackwater setup. A favorite among wild betta enthusiasts for its rich coloration.
Requires very soft, extremely acidic blackwater conditions (pH 3.5–6.0) — use RO water with peat or Indian almond leaves. No or minimal filtration; still water preferred. Keep as a pair in a heavily planted nano tank. Feed micro live and frozen foods: daphnia, micro worms, artemia nauplii. Tight lid essential.
