Carassius auratus
Also known as: Crowned Pearlscale, Hamanishiki, High-head Pearlscale Goldfish
Origin: China
The Crowned Pearlscale, also called Hamanishiki, combines the pearlscale's distinctive rounded body and domed scales with a fluid-filled head crown growth similar to that of the bubble-eye goldfish. This double specialty makes it one of the most unusual goldfish available. Both the pearl scales and the head crown are delicate and require careful husbandry.
Water: 10–22°C, pH 6.5–7.5, immaculate water quality for crown and scale health. Tank: minimum 120 L, only smooth décor, gentle flow to protect both the crown and pearl scales. Feeding: sinking-only foods in small portions to prevent buoyancy and bloat issues. Behaviour: slow and delicate; a true showpiece fish that requires experienced care. Compatibility: best kept alone or with other pearlscale goldfish; no nippy tank mates.
