Betta splendens var.
Also known as: Crowntail Betta, CT Betta, Siamese Fighting Fish
Origin: Southeast Asia (Thailand)
The Crowntail Betta is one of the most distinctive and recognizable Betta splendens varieties, first developed in Indonesia in the 1990s. The hallmark feature is the caudal fin, where the fin rays extend beyond the webbing to create dramatic spiky or branching projections resembling a crown or elaborate fringe. This gives the fish a wild, spiky-finned appearance quite different from the rounded softness of the Halfmoon variety.
Like all Betta splendens varieties, the Crowntail is a product of intense selective breeding from the wild fighting fish of Thailand and surrounding regions. Males are fiercely territorial toward other males and should never be housed together. The labyrinth organ allows surface air-breathing, enabling survival in low-oxygen conditions but requiring humid, warm air above the waterline.
Crowntail Bettas are available in an extraordinary range of colors: solid, bicolor, multicolor, marble, butterfly, and metallic patterns, in every shade imaginable. Their personalities are as individual as their coloration — some are bold and constantly active, others are shy and secretive. Proper care focuses on clean, warm water, a varied carnivorous diet, appropriate housing, and stimulation to prevent boredom. The Crowntail variety was developed primarily in Jakarta, Indonesia, and spread rapidly through the international betta hobby in the late 1990s and 2000s due to the dramatic visual impact of the spiked fin rays. Show-quality Crowntails are judged on the symmetry of ray branching, the degree of reduction of the webbing between rays, and the overall fullness and evenness of the fin spread.
Tank Setup Minimum 20-liter tank for one male. Gentle filtration with minimal surface current. Heater maintaining 24–30°C. Secure lid to prevent jumping. Live or silk plants for shelter and fin protection — avoid sharp plastic decorations that may snag the elongated fin rays. Provide hides and visual enrichment.
Water Parameters pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 24–30°C. Soft to moderately hard water. Weekly 25–30% water changes. Zero ammonia and nitrite. Small tank sizes require more frequent monitoring and water changes.
Feeding Carnivorous. High-quality betta pellets plus regular supplementation with frozen daphnia, bloodworms, and brine shrimp. Feed once to twice daily in small quantities. Remove uneaten food promptly.
Fin Care The extended fin rays of Crowntail Bettas are particularly prone to fin rot and physical damage. Maintain pristine water quality and avoid all sharp tank decorations. Treat fin rot promptly with appropriate medication and water changes.
Male Isolation House each male individually. Provide non-reflective backgrounds or cover to prevent chronic mirror flaring if kept in a room with other bettas.
Community Compatibility Can be kept with small, peaceful, short-finned species. Avoid fin-nipping fish, other labyrinth fish, and species mistaken for rival bettas (bright red fish, similar body shapes).
Health Notes Fin rot is the most common issue, especially in small tanks with infrequent water changes. Velvet (Oodinium) is a serious parasitic risk in new arrivals. Quarantine carefully.
Long-term Notes Crowntail Bettas require particularly diligent water quality monitoring given the vulnerability of their extended fin rays to fin rot. Weekly water changes, zero ammonia and nitrite, and appropriate temperature stability are non-negotiable for maintaining fin integrity throughout the fish's 2–4 year lifespan. Well-maintained Crowntails are among the most spectacular single-fish displays in the hobby. The extended fin rays of Crowntail Bettas require particular attention in planted tanks — sharp plant leaves or rigid decoration edges can physically damage the rays. Regular visual inspection of fin condition is recommended weekly.
