Betta splendens
Also known as: Crowntail Betta, CT Betta, Siamese Fighting Fish
Origin: Southeast Asia
Developed in Indonesia in the 1990s, the crowntail betta has become one of the most recognisable varieties in the hobby. The reduced fin webbing and extended ray tips create a dramatic, spiky appearance especially striking during a full flare. Males can display vivid reds, blues, and multicolour combinations.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to medium hardness — avoid strong currents that damage spiky fins. Tank: minimum 20L, planted with broad-leaved plants for resting at the surface. Feeding: carnivore — betta pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia; feed twice daily. Behaviour: males are highly aggressive to conspecifics — one male per tank. Compatibility: good with peaceful community fish; avoid nippy species that target extended rays.
