Cryptic Cory

Corydoras crypticus earns its name from the cryptic, irregular mottling of brown, grey, and cream that covers its body — a pattern that renders the fish almost invisible when resting on sandy or leaf-covered substrates. It hails from the Rio Juruá in Amazonas state, one of the most biodiverse river systems in the Amazon basin, and is rarely collected for export.

In its natural environment it lives in shallow, slow-moving, soft blackwater streams with sandy banks and abundant leaf litter. Replicating these conditions in captivity — fine sand, slightly acidic to neutral water, tannins from Indian almond leaves or driftwood, and subdued lighting — will produce the healthiest and most confident fish.

C. crypticus is a calm, methodical substrate forager that co-exists peacefully with all non-aggressive species. It is a particularly good choice for naturalistic Amazonian blackwater biotopes. Ensure excellent water quality and feed a varied diet; the species can be shy at feeding time and benefits from competition-free access to food.

Water: Soft and acidic, pH 5.8–7.0, temperature 23–27°C; tannin-stained blackwater conditions preferred. Tank: 80 L minimum with sand substrate, Indian almond leaves, and driftwood; avoid bright lighting. Feeding: Sinking granules, live or frozen bloodworm, Daphnia, and Tubifex; feed in the evening when the fish is most active. Breeding: Rarely bred; blackwater conditions and live food conditioning likely required to trigger spawning. Compatibility: Peaceful with all small, calm fish; ideal for Amazonian blackwater biotopes.
