Cryptocentrus sp.
Also known as: Cryptocentrus Banded Sleeper Goby, Banded Shrimp Goby, Tiger Shrimp Goby
Origin: Indo-Pacific, Red Sea to Japan and Australia
Cryptocentrus species, commonly referred to as Banded Sleeper Gobies or Shrimp Gobies, are a large and diverse genus of gobies distributed across the tropical Indo-Pacific, from the Red Sea and East Africa to Japan and Australia. They inhabit sandy and rubble bottoms in shallow coastal waters, coral lagoons, and mangrove margins, and are most famous for their remarkable mutualistic relationship with alpheid snapping shrimp — the shrimp excavates and maintains a burrow while the goby stands guard, alerting its partner to danger with tail flicks. In the aquarium, this relationship can be replicated by housing a Cryptocentrus goby with a compatible Alpheus shrimp. The fish are carnivorous, perching motionlessly on the substrate before striking at passing prey. They are best suited to brackish or marine nano reef setups with a sandy substrate.
Water: 24–28 °C, pH 7.8–8.5, GH 15–30, KH 8–20; brackish to marine (SG 1.010–1.025); stable parameters required. Tank: 80 L minimum; deep fine sand substrate (5–10 cm) for burrow; rubble and open sand areas; low to moderate flow. Feeding: Carnivore; small frozen mysis, brine shrimp, and copepods; sinking pellets accepted by some individuals. Breeding: Benthic spawner in burrow; rarely bred in captivity; pair formation requires male-female identification. Compatibility: Generally peaceful; can coexist with reef fish; pair with Alpheus shrimp for natural symbiosis display.
