Cryptoheros nanoluteus
Also known as: Yellow Nano Cichlid, Panama Dwarf Cichlid
Origin: Panama
Cryptoheros nanoluteus is a diminutive jewel from Panama, representing one of the smallest members of the genus. Its common name perfectly describes its most notable feature: brilliant yellow flanks that develop in mature individuals, particularly intense in dominant males. The species is a dedicated cave brooder that adds vivid color and behavioral interest to small aquarium setups.
Despite its small size, C. nanoluteus has the typical cichlid personality — curious, interactive, and fiercely protective of its brood. The pair bond is strong and both parents participate in defending the spawning cave and the subsequent fry. Their small size means they can be housed in modestly sized aquaria while still enjoying the full behavioral repertoire of a Central American cichlid.
Water chemistry should lean toward moderately hard and neutral to slightly alkaline to replicate Panamanian Atlantic slope conditions. High-quality nutrition with carotenoid supplementation enhances the characteristic yellow coloration.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 8–18, KH 4–10; neutral to slightly alkaline, moderately hard water. Tank: 80 L minimum; a single cave or coconut shell; light planting; gentle filtration. Feeding: Omnivore — small-format cichlid pellets, micro frozen foods, brine shrimp; krill for color enhancement. Breeding: Cave brooder; extremely small clutches (40–100 eggs); female guards eggs; male patrols perimeter. Compatibility: Suitable with small, peaceful fish; avoid housing with large or boisterous species.
