Cryptoheros spilurus
Also known as: Blue-eyed Cichlid
Origin: Belize, Guatemala, Mexico
Cryptoheros spilurus, the Blue-eyed Cichlid, is a small and attractive Central American cave brooder found in Belize, Guatemala, and southern Mexico. It is named for the vivid blue eye coloration that develops in adults, particularly in dominant males. Its body shows a pleasing pattern of dark lateral bars on an olive-gold background, and the fins carry subtle blue iridescence.
This species is one of the more manageable small to mid-sized Central American cichlids and does well in modestly sized aquaria. It is a secretive cave-brooder that will readily spawn in flowerpots, caves, or coconut shell halves. The female takes primary responsibility for fry guarding while the male defends the outer territory.
C. spilurus is well-suited to the intermediate cichlid keeper and makes an engaging display fish when provided with appropriate structure and water quality.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 8–20, KH 4–12; moderately hard water preferred. Tank: 120 L minimum; caves, flowerpots, coconut shells; moderate planting tolerated. Feeding: Omnivore — small cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, and vegetable flake. Breeding: Cave brooder; female guards eggs and wrigglers; male guards perimeter; brood size 100–250 eggs. Compatibility: Peaceful enough for a larger community tank with robust mid-size fish outside breeding season.
