Caridina cantonensis var. 'Crystal Black' S
Also known as: Crystal Black Shrimp, CBS S Grade, Black Bee Shrimp
Origin: Selectively bred; base species from Southern China
The Crystal Black Shrimp S Grade is the black-and-white counterpart of the famous Crystal Red, displaying clean banding on a white base with black rather than red markings. S grade specimens offer accessible entry into graded Crystal Black keeping, with clear visible patterning that still provides impressive visual contrast in the aquarium. Like all Crystal shrimp, they demand soft, acidic, low-TDS water with an active buffering substrate. They graze on biofilm, algae, and leaf litter, and benefit from regular supplemental feeding. A dedicated Caridina setup with a mature sponge filter and dense moss coverage creates the ideal environment for these delicate shrimp.
Water: pH 6.0–6.8, TDS 80–130 ppm, temperature 20–24°C; use RO water with Caridina mineral additive and active substrate. Tank: 30+ litres; heavily planted with mosses; sponge filter essential. Feeding: Biofilm, algae, blanched vegetables, and shrimp-specific pellets. Breeding: Females carry 15–25 eggs for 3–4 weeks; stable parameters critical for juvenile survival. Compatibility: Species-only or with other soft-water Caridina only.
