Caridina cantonensis var.
Also known as: Crystal Red Shrimp, CRS, Red Bee Shrimp
Origin: East Asia (captive-bred, originally China)
The Crystal Red Shrimp is one of the most iconic and sought-after dwarf shrimp in the freshwater hobby. A selective breeding achievement developed in Japan, it displays bold alternating bands of deep crimson red and crisp white across its small, translucent body. Specimens are graded from C through SSS class based on the extent and purity of white coverage, with higher grades commanding significant premiums among collectors.
Originally derived from the Tiger Shrimp lineage, Crystal Reds are captive-bred and adapted to very specific water parameters that differ markedly from typical community aquarium conditions. They require soft, acidic water with virtually no carbonate hardness, making reverse osmosis water blended with a dedicated Caridina mineral supplement essentially mandatory for long-term success.
Crystal Red Shrimp are peaceful, active invertebrates that spend their days grazing over surfaces, picking at biofilm, decaying leaves, and fine particulate matter. They are best kept in a dedicated shrimp tank or with very small, non-predatory fish such as pygmy rasboras or ember tetras. A well-established, planted nano aquarium with stable, pristine water conditions provides the ideal environment. Their sensitivity to parameter fluctuations and copper makes them a challenge best suited to experienced shrimp keepers.
Tank Setup
A dedicated shrimp tank of at least 20 litres is recommended. Use an inert or mildly acidifying substrate such as active buffering shrimp substrate (e.g. Amazonia or Controsoil) to help maintain the required low pH and zero KH. Dense planting with mosses such as Java moss or Taiwan moss, along with fine-leaved stem plants, provides grazing surfaces and cover. A sponge filter is strongly preferred over hang-on-back or canister filters to prevent shrimp from being drawn into the intake.
Water Parameters
Maintain pH between 5.8 and 6.8, GH of 3–6, and KH of 0–2. Temperature should be kept cool, between 18 and 24 °C. Use reverse osmosis water remineralised with a Caridina-specific mineral salt. Avoid any tap water unless it has been tested and confirmed safe. Perform small, frequent water changes (10–15% weekly) using temperature-matched, parameter-matched water to avoid shock.
Feeding
Crystal Red Shrimp are primarily detritivores that graze continuously on biofilm and decomposing organic matter. Supplement with high-quality shrimp-specific foods: algae wafers, snowflake food (dried soybean husks), blanched vegetables such as spinach or zucchini, and occasional protein foods such as Daphnia. Feed small amounts every one to two days and remove uneaten food within a few hours to protect water quality.
Tank Mates
Best kept as a species-only tank or with other similarly graded Caridina shrimp. Very small, peaceful nano fish may be kept with caution, but any fish large enough to eat shrimp should be avoided entirely. Avoid snails that may compete heavily for food.
Health and Breeding
Crystal Reds breed readily in stable, optimal conditions. Females carry pale orange eggs under their tails for three to four weeks. Baby shrimp are miniature versions of adults and require no special feeding. Never use copper-based medications or plant fertilisers containing copper, as even trace amounts are lethal to shrimp.
