Caridina cantonensis var. 'Crystal Red' S
Also known as: Crystal Red Shrimp, CRS S Grade, Bee Shrimp
Origin: Selectively bred; base species from Southern China
The Crystal Red Shrimp S Grade is the starting point for collectors entering the world of graded Caridina. Displaying distinct red and white banding on a white base body, these shrimp are selectively bred from Caridina cantonensis stock. S grade specimens offer clear patterning without the premium cost of higher grades, making them accessible to hobbyists ready to maintain soft, acidic water conditions. They graze on biofilm and algae and benefit from supplemental feeding with specialized shrimp foods. A mature, stable aquarium with a sponge filter and substrate buffering system is recommended for long-term success.
Water: pH 6.0–6.8, TDS 80–130 ppm, temperature 20–24°C; use RO water with shrimp mineral salts and an active buffering substrate. Tank: Minimum 30 litres; heavily planted with mosses and fine-leaf plants; sponge filtration essential to avoid suction losses. Feeding: Biofilm, algae, and blanched vegetables; supplement with dedicated Caridina shrimp pellets and leaf litter. Breeding: Females carry 15–30 eggs for 3–4 weeks; stable, consistent parameters are critical for successful hatching and juvenile survival. Compatibility: Species-only or with other soft-water Caridina; avoid fish that will predate on small shrimp.
