Caridina cantonensis var. 'Crystal Red' SS
Also known as: Crystal Red SS, CRS SS Grade
Origin: Selectively bred; base species from Southern China
The SS grade Crystal Red Shrimp represents a meaningful step above base S grade in terms of color coverage and definition. Red bands are broader and more saturated, with improved white coverage creating sharper contrast. These Caridina cantonensis variants require the same soft, acidic, low-TDS parameters as all Crystal Reds but reward the effort with noticeably more striking visual impact. They graze continuously on biofilm and benefit from a tank rich in mosses and fine-leaf plants. Stable parameters are paramount — even slight fluctuations in TDS or pH can trigger molting problems or color fade. A buffering substrate paired with RO water is strongly recommended.
Water: pH 6.0–6.8, TDS 80–130 ppm, temperature 20–24°C; RO water with Caridina mineral mix and active substrate buffer required. Tank: 30+ litres; heavily planted with Java moss, Riccia, and fine-leaf plants; sponge filter to prevent shrimp loss. Feeding: Biofilm, algae wafers, blanched spinach or zucchini, and dedicated high-grade shrimp pellets. Breeding: Females brood 15–25 eggs; keep parameters exceptionally stable during brooding for best hatch rates. Compatibility: Species-only setup strongly preferred; avoid mixing with less demanding Neocaridina.
