Oxydoras niger
Also known as: Cuiu Cuiu, Black Doradid, Ripsaw Catfish
Origin: South America
Oxydoras niger is native to the Amazon and Orinoco River systems, where it inhabits the deep, sandy-bottomed main channels and large tributaries. It is one of the largest doradid catfishes, covered from head to tail in bony lateral scutes bearing sharp spines. Despite its intimidating appearance it is a peaceful herbivore and detritivore that roots through soft substrate seeking decaying plant matter, invertebrates, and seeds. It is rarely aggressive and can be kept with large tankmates. Its size demands very substantial aquaria and powerful filtration. A remarkable display fish for the large-catfish enthusiast.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to moderately hard; pristine water; very powerful filtration. Tank: Minimum 1500L; very deep fine sand substrate for rooting; large driftwood; subdued lighting. Feeding: Omnivore; sinking pellets, earthworms, blanched vegetables, fruits, algae wafers; root feeder. Breeding: Not documented in home aquaria; builds leaf nest in Amazonian floodplain in nature. Compatibility: Peaceful with large fish; bony spines deter predation; avoid housing with small delicate species.
