Biotodoma cupido
Also known as: Cupido Dwarf Eartheater, Cupid Cichlid, Cupido Eartheater
Origin: Brazil, Venezuela, Guyana
Biotodoma cupido is a small, elegantly proportioned eartheater with a vivid lateral band and an eye-catching colour pattern of green, gold, and orange that intensifies on breeding fish. Its compact size — rarely exceeding 12 cm — makes it one of the most accessible eartheaters for hobbyists who lack the space for the larger Geophagus and Satanoperca species.
Despite its small size, Biotodoma cupido retains the characteristic eartheater sifting behaviour and requires fine sand substrate for natural expression. It is relatively peaceful and can be kept in community aquaria with small to medium schooling fish. Water quality requirements are typical of Amazonian species: soft, slightly acidic, warm, and clean.
Breeding in captivity follows the biparental mouthbrooding pattern of the broader eartheater clade. Both parents share buccal incubation and fry guarding duties. Conditioning on quality live foods reliably triggers spawning in stable groups. An ideal eartheater for smaller tanks and community setups.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 5.5-7.0, soft (1-8 dGH); clean water with moderate flow; sensitive to nitrate build-up. Tank: Minimum 120L; fine sand substrate, driftwood and leaf litter for shelter and territorial anchoring. Feeding: Small sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, Artemia nauplii, daphnia; live food enhances breeding condition. Breeding: Biparental mouthbrooder; both parents share incubation; peaceful during fry care. Compatibility: Peaceful; excellent with small tetras, pencilfish, corydoras, and dwarf cichlids.
