Tetraodon cutcutia
Also known as: Cutcutia Puffer, Ocellated Puffer, Indian Freshwater Puffer, Potato Puffer (India)
Origin: India, Bangladesh, Myanmar (floodplain rivers)
Tetraodon cutcutia is distributed across the floodplain rivers of India, Bangladesh, and Myanmar, where it inhabits slow-moving to moderately flowing waters with abundant invertebrate prey. Its compact, rounded body is covered with mottled brown-grey patterning that provides excellent camouflage among leaf litter and muddy substrates. This species is regarded as one of the more manageable medium freshwater puffers due to its slightly less extreme aggression compared to some African relatives, though it will still bite tankmates and must be housed carefully. It thrives on a diet rich in snails, which are critical for keeping its ever-growing beak in check. Planted aquariums with hardy species such as Java fern and Anubias suit this puffer well.
Water: pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 22–28°C, soft to moderately hard; tolerant of a broad range; avoid extremes. Tank: 150 L minimum; sandy substrate, leaf litter, driftwood, robust plants; moderate filtration. Feeding: Snails critical for beak maintenance; supplement with mussels, clams, frozen bloodworm, earthworms. Breeding: Paternal mouthbrooder; male guards eggs briefly; rarely achieved in captivity. Compatibility: Keep alone or with very fast, robust species; not suitable for community aquariums.
