Cyphotilapia frontosa
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Congo
Cyphotilapia frontosa 'Blue Zaire' is one of the most regal freshwater fish available. Adults develop a prominent nuchal hump on the forehead, vivid blue-white barring, and a majestic swimming motion. It is a deep-water predator that feeds on smaller cichlids in nature. In the aquarium it requires a large deep tank, colony of 6–10 fish, and long-term commitment — it grows slowly and can live 15+ years. Its slow, ponderous movements make it a centrepiece species.
Tank: 500+ L, deep (60+ cm). Colony of 6–10. pH 8.0–8.5. Feed: large meaty foods, krill, market shrimp. Eats any fish it can swallow. Slow grower — 5+ years to full colour.
