Cyphotilapia frontosa
Also known as: Tanzania Blue Frontosa, Blue Frontosa
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
Cyphotilapia frontosa 'Tanzania Blue' is perhaps the most celebrated colour form of C. frontosa in terms of blue intensity. Dominant males develop an extraordinary electric-blue pigmentation throughout the head, nape, and upper flanks that deepens with age and condition, making this form the benchmark for Frontosa colouration in the hobby.
This population is exported from the Tanzanian coastline and has established a strong following among serious Frontosa collectors worldwide. Captive-bred specimens are available from dedicated breeders, though wild-caught imports command significant premium pricing.
As with all Frontosa, the Tanzania Blue requires a large, deep aquarium with excellent water quality. Their intelligence and personalised behaviour make them highly rewarding long-term aquarium residents, and well-kept specimens become genuinely interactive with their keeper.
Water: 24–26°C, pH 7.8–9.0, GH 10–18, KH 8–16; premium water quality directly enhances and maintains blue pigmentation. Tank: 500 L minimum; ample height and length; structured décor with open midwater; low to moderate lighting. Feeding: Premium large cichlid pellets; frozen whole shrimp, mussel, and krill; feed adults 2–3 times weekly only. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; 30–60 eggs per clutch; females hold 4–5 weeks; 1M:5F harem ideal. Compatibility: Excellent long-term tankmate for large peaceful Tanganyika species and robust Synodontis.
