Cyprichromis sp. 'Leptosoma Jumbo Kitumba'

The Kitumba variant of the Cyprichromis sp. 'Leptosoma Jumbo' group represents one of the largest and most imposing members of the genus, with males approaching 13 cm and displaying an extraordinary combination of deep cobalt-blue body colouration and brilliant yellow caudal fin lobes that flash dramatically during courtship displays. Collected from Kitumba in Zambia, this is one of the most sought-after Cyprichromis variants in the specialist hobby.

Like all Cyprichromis, the Jumbo Kitumba form breeds in open water using a mid-water lek system. Males establish vertical display territories, rising and falling through the water column in shimmering courtship dances while females cruise below, assessing potential mates. Successful males release a single milt cloud as the female turns to catch his egg; she then mouthbroods for approximately three to four weeks.

A large aquarium of at least 200 L is required to maintain a school of this impressive cichlid at its best. Provide a tall tank for maximum vertical swimming space, excellent filtration, and moderate to strong water movement. Feed generously with zooplankton-based frozen foods to support the energy demands of active display behaviour.

Feeding: Frozen Artemia, Cyclops, Daphnia, small Mysis; quality cichlid pellets; twice daily. Breeding: Open-water maternal mouthbrooder; female holds ~3–4 weeks; release fry separately. Compatibility: Peaceful; ideal with Tanganyika shell dwellers on the floor; avoid aggressive larger cichlids.
