Cyrtocara moorii
Also known as: Blue Dolphin Cichlid, Moorii Hap, Dolphin Cichlid
Origin: Lake Malawi
Cyrtocara moorii, the Blue Dolphin Cichlid, is one of the most instantly recognizable cichlids in the entire hobby. Adults — particularly dominant males — develop a pronounced nuchal hump that creates the dolphin-like profile responsible for the common name. Combined with a uniform powder-blue coloration across the entire body, moorii is a visually striking and elegantly simple fish.
Despite reaching 25 cm, this species is one of the more peaceful large Malawi Haps and has a long history in the hobby as a compatible centerpiece for mixed Peacock and Hap communities. It is a commensal species that follows sand-sifters in nature, picking invertebrates disturbed from the substrate. This behavior is readily observed in aquaria when it is kept with appropriate sand-sifting companions.
Maternal mouthbrooder producing moderate broods. Females lack the pronounced hump. Longevity is impressive at up to 15 years in well-maintained conditions. One of the most recommended large Malawi Haps for community aquariums.
Water: pH 7.6–8.8, 24–28°C, GH 10–20, KH 10–18; excellent water quality enhances the clarity of the blue coloration. Tank: 400 L minimum; open sandy floor; wide tank footprint; some large rocks; one male per tank. Feeding: Carnivore pellets, frozen krill, mysis; supplement with spirulina; feed twice daily. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; females hold 3–4 weeks; large broods when in prime condition. Compatibility: One of the best large peaceful Malawi Haps; excellent with Aulonocara, utaka, and medium Haps.
