Cyrtocara moorii
Origin: Lake Malawi, Africa (sandy substrates, widespread)
Cyrtocara moorii, the Blue Dolphin Cichlid, is a majestic Lake Malawi haplochromine instantly recognizable by its large nuchal hump and overall striking cobalt-blue colouration. It forages in sandy substrates, often following sand-sifting cichlids to pick up disturbed invertebrates. One of the most elegant and largest peaceful Malawi haplochromines — a magnificent centrepiece for a spacious Lake Malawi biotope.
Provide a large aquarium (400L+) with sandy substrate and open swimming space. Maintain hard, alkaline Malawi water with good filtration. Feed quality cichlid pellets, frozen krill, artemia. Keep with other large, peaceful Malawi haps and avoid very aggressive mbuna. The nuchal hump develops more fully in males with age and good conditions.
