Satanoperca daemon
Also known as: Daemon Eartheater, Three-spot Eartheater, Demon Eartheater
Origin: Venezuela, Brazil (Rio Negro)
Satanoperca daemon is the most dramatic member of its genus, reaching over 30 cm and bearing three large, yellow-orange rimmed ocelli on a dusky, almost black body that shimmers with iridescent blue under side-lighting. It is a flagship species for the dedicated blackwater cichlid keeper and commands significant respect among South American cichlid enthusiasts worldwide.
This species is strictly a blackwater fish, requiring soft, warm, highly acidic water with very low mineral content. Water tinted with botanical additions — Indian almond leaves, alder cones, and driftwood — is strongly recommended. It is highly sensitive to nitrate accumulation and requires pristine conditions maintained by strong filtration and frequent partial changes.
Despite its imposing size, Satanoperca daemon is a gentle giant and thrives in the company of large, peaceful tankmates. Breeding in captivity is an achievement reserved for experienced keepers who can maintain blackwater conditions consistently.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 4.5-6.5, very soft (0-3 dGH); blackwater essential — heavily tannin-stained water strongly recommended. Tank: Minimum 400L; fine black sand, heavy driftwood, dense botanical additions; dim indirect lighting. Feeding: Sinking eartheater pellets, live and frozen blackworm, bloodworm, daphnia; reluctant surface feeder. Breeding: Biparental mouthbrooder; extremely demanding; requires perfect blackwater conditions and conditioning. Compatibility: Peaceful giant; ideal with large cardinal tetras, other Satanoperca, and large gentle catfish.
