Satanoperca daemon
Also known as: Three-spot Eartheater, Daemon, Ventuari Daemon
Origin: Venezuela (Ventuari, upper Orinoco)
Satanoperca daemon from the Ventuari river drainage of Venezuela is among the most distinctive and enigmatic cichlids in the hobby. It bears three large, bold, ocellated spots arranged along the lateral line — a feature unparalleled among other cichlids and the source of both its common name and its mystique among collectors. Found in warm, very soft, acidic blackwater of the upper Orinoco system, it is a highly sensitive species that demands pristine water quality and ultra-soft conditions. A delayed mouthbrooder, it sifts sand for invertebrates and forms loose groups. The aquarium must feature deep fine sand, tannin-staining from driftwood and leaf litter, very warm temperatures, and minimal water parameter fluctuation. An advanced species for dedicated soft-water cichlid enthusiasts.
Water: Very soft; pH 4.5–6.5, temperature 26–30 °C, very low conductivity. Tank: 280 L+; deep fine sand, leaf litter, tannins, subdued lighting. Feeding: Sinking pellets, frozen artemia, daphnia, bloodworm; varied diet essential. Breeding: Delayed mouthbrooder; pristine blackwater conditions required for success. Compatibility: Gentle only; keep with very soft-water Orinoco species of similar size.
