Poecilia sphenops var.
Also known as: Dalmatian Molly, Marble Molly
Origin: Captive bred (originally Mexico and Central America)
The Dalmatian Molly is one of the most recognisable aquarium fish in the world, instantly identifiable by its white to silver body covered in randomly distributed black spots that vary in size and shape between individuals. The pattern is produced by a genetic interaction between the black and white pigmentation genes.
No two Dalmatian Mollies have identical spot patterns, which adds to their charm — a group of six fish will show six entirely different spot distributions. Spot coverage ranges from lightly freckled to heavily blotched individuals.
Care requirements are identical to other Poecilia sphenops varieties — hard, slightly saline water and an algae-inclusive diet produce the healthiest fish with the most vibrant spot contrast.
Water: 23–28 °C, pH 7.5–8.5, hard water; aquarium salt (1–2 g/L) beneficial. Tank: 80 L minimum; plants for cover; adequate filtration. Feeding: Algae flake and vegetable matter essential; supplement with quality pellets and occasional live/frozen. Breeding: Very prolific; spot patterns in fry are individually variable and unpredictable. Compatibility: Peaceful community fish; avoid very soft-water species.
