Danio absconditus
Also known as: Hidden Danio, Absconditus Danio
Origin: Myanmar
Danio absconditus is a recently described species from Myanmar that had long been overlooked or confused with related species due to its relatively subdued colouration compared to showier danios. Its name, meaning 'hidden' in Latin, reflects its cryptic nature and the difficulty of distinguishing it from similar sympatric species in the field.
In the aquarium it displays typical danio behaviour: active, constantly moving, and best kept in a group of eight or more. Its colouration, while not as vivid as Danio choprae or the CPD, has a quiet elegance — a silver-brown body with subtle iridescent lateral markings that catch the light gently under warm aquarium lighting.
For danio collectors and enthusiasts who have explored the mainstream species and wish to add scientifically interesting but less commonly encountered forms to their collection, Danio absconditus represents a rewarding species whose very rarity in the trade makes it an acquisition worth celebrating.
Water: Temperature 20–26°C, pH 6.5–7.5, GH 5–15; clean, well-oxygenated water; regular partial water changes. Tank: Minimum 60 L; open swimming space with planted perimeter; gentle to moderate flow; secure lid essential. Feeding: Micro-pellets, flake, and frozen micro-foods; live daphnia and brine shrimp welcome; not a fussy feeder. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; follows standard small danio breeding approach; rarely bred by hobbyists. Compatibility: Peaceful with all small to medium community fish; ideal with other rare Danio species and nano cyprinids.
