Danionella dracula
Also known as: Dracula Fish, Danionella dracula
Origin: Streams of Myanmar
Described in 2009 from streams in Myanmar, Danionella dracula made international headlines when scientists discovered males possess elongated canine-like teeth used in ritualised jaw-wrestling. Despite this, the fish is completely peaceful with anything it cannot fit in its tiny mouth. It is one of the most evolutionarily paedomorphic vertebrates studied.
Water: 20–26 °C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderate (GH 3–12). Tank: 20 L minimum; tight-fitting lid essential as they can jump; fine substrate. Feeding: Micro foods only — baby brine shrimp, rotifers, micro pellets, infusoria. Behaviour: Active, fast micro schooler; males spar jaw-to-jaw without injury; keep 10+. Compatibility: Suitable with small Boraras, nano shrimp; avoid any predatory or large tank mate.
