Danionella mirifica
Also known as: Sound-Producing Danionella, Mirifica Micro Fish
Origin: Myanmar
Danionella mirifica produces sounds at levels approaching 140 dB (adjusted for water) relative to its body size, making it one of the loudest animals relative to body size. The mechanism involves a drumming cartilage and a specialised rib structure unique among vertebrates. It is an extraordinary species for both the science enthusiast and serious nano keeper.
Water: 20–26 °C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderate (GH 3–12). Tank: 20 L minimum; peaceful species-only or micro-fish community; secure lid. Feeding: Micro foods — baby brine shrimp, micro pellets, rotifers, infusoria. Behaviour: Active schooler; audible clicking from males during social interaction. Compatibility: Suitable with other Danionella species and nano shrimp only.
