Datnioides microlepis
Also known as: Datnoid, Indonesian Tiger Fish, Wide-bar Datnoid
Origin: Southeast Asia
Datnioides microlepis is native to the large river systems of Borneo and Sumatra, where it inhabits both freshwater and brackish estuarine zones. Its dramatic pattern of broad dark vertical bars on a gold-to-silver body has earned it the common name Indonesian Tiger Fish. It is laterally compressed with a large upturned mouth suited to engulfing prey. It requires very high water quality, may benefit from low-level salt addition to replicate estuarine conditions, and can be aggressive toward conspecifics at small numbers. Larger groups of 4 or more tend to reduce individual aggression. A highly sought-after display fish for the large-tank specialist.
Water: 24-30°C, pH 7.0-8.0, moderately hard; small amounts of aquarium salt (1-3 g/L) often beneficial. Tank: Minimum 600L; robust filtration; open swimming space; large driftwood as shelter. Feeding: Carnivore; whole small fish, prawns, earthworms, mussel; train onto large carnivore pellets. Breeding: Not well documented in captivity; seasonal spawner in estuarine zones. Compatibility: Aggressive toward conspecifics in small numbers; keep solo or in groups of 4+; predatory toward small fish.
