Stiphodon decoratus
Also known as: Decorated Stiphodon Goby, Blue-striped Hillstream Goby
Origin: Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands
Stiphodon decoratus is widely regarded as one of the most visually spectacular small freshwater fish in the hobby. Adult males are breathtaking — electric blue with vivid orange horizontal stripes along the flanks, highly contrasting orange dorsal and caudal fins, and a metallic sheen that intensifies in courting display. Females are considerably more subdued in patterning, as is typical for the genus. The species is amphidromous — larvae drift to sea and juveniles migrate back upstream — making captive breeding without marine larval facilities essentially impossible at present.
In the aquarium, S. decoratus requires conditions quite different from typical tropical community fish: fast, clear, well-oxygenated water over smooth rock and gravel, moderate hardness, and temperatures in the 22–26 °C range. It is a dedicated algae and biofilm grazer, rasping microalgae from smooth surfaces throughout the day. Males are territorial toward other male Stiphodon and may spar vigorously — a tank with visual barriers is important when keeping more than one male.
All trade specimens are wild-caught, making responsible sourcing and careful quarantine essential. New imports should be kept in calm, clean, well-oxygenated quarantine for at least three weeks before introduction to a display tank.
Water: 22–26°C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 6–18, KH 4–12; strong flow and very high dissolved oxygen; clear water with low nutrients to promote algae on rocks rather than filamentous algae. Tank: 60 L minimum; smooth boulders and flat rocks with established green microalgae; gentle sandy areas for resting; excellent oxygenation. Feeding: Herbivore — rasps microalgae and biofilm; supplement with spirulina wafers, Repashy Soilent Green, and algae-based gel food. Breeding: Amphidromous; captive breeding requires marine larval rearing — not achievable in standard aquaria. Compatibility: Males territorial with each other; peaceful toward unrelated species; do not house with boisterous or nippy tankmates.
