Corydoras delphax
Also known as: Delphax Cory, Head-patch Cory
Origin: Colombia (Meta River tributaries)
Corydoras delphax is a medium-sized cory from the Meta River tributaries in the Colombian Llanos, where clear highland streams descend from the eastern Andes foothills onto the savanna plain. Its most striking feature is a triangular or irregular dark patch on the top of the head, which combines with scattered body spots and a faint lateral stripe to create a distinctive appearance.
As a Colombian highland species, C. delphax inhabits relatively clear, well-oxygenated water with moderate flow. Water hardness is slightly higher than typical Amazonian cory habitat due to Andean mineral inputs, making this species somewhat more tolerant of moderately hard water. This can be advantageous for aquarists in areas with moderately hard tap water.
This species is sporadically available through Colombian specialist exporters. It is a good-natured, sociable fish that schools actively and forages enthusiastically. Care is intermediate: maintain clean water with moderate hardness, provide a fine substrate, and keep in a group of six or more for best behaviour.
Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 6.0–7.2, temperature 22–26°C; tolerates slightly harder water than Amazon species. Tank: 80 L with fine sand, moderate plant cover, and good oxygenation to reflect Colombian highland streams. Feeding: Sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, Daphnia, and Tubifex; active feeder. Breeding: Typical cory spawning; cool water change trigger; moderate difficulty. Compatibility: Peaceful with all community species; suitable for mixed Colombian or Orinoco biotopes.
